Human Services Department
Human services is one of the fastest-growing fields today. Each individual in our society is entitled to services designed to enhance development and well-being, including economic and social assistance for those unable to provide for their own needs. Human services workers act as agents to help individuals, families and communities cope better with crisis, change, or stress and function more effectively.
Human services professionals find employment as social workers, mental health counselors, drug and alcohol abuse counselors, physical therapy aides, activity aides, and much more. They work in hospitals, clinics, senior citizen residences, child care centers, and community service facilities, among others.
Fieldwork
The fieldwork courses are an important part of the Human Services Program. They allow students to apply concepts learned in the classroom to real-life situations. The fieldwork courses engage students in supervised human services practice and provide opportunities for students to perform professional tasks under supervision and to apply concepts and principles learned in both class and field.
Students are required to complete 135 hours (approximately 8 hours per week for 15 weeks) at a field placement plus attend weekly supervision (1 hour per week for 15 weeks) with Professor D’Arcangelo to share their experiences and discuss issues that may arise at their placements.
